Kenneth Flynn: "Biodiversity challenge, the devil is in the microbial detail"

We have only scratched the surface of what this biodiversity of microbes is capable of. Is the interesting opinion of the microbiologist Dr. Kenneth Flynn.

In this article appeared on Biodiversity Perspectives, Dr. Flynn, Research Assistant at University of New Hampshire, wrote that biodiversity represents a growing challenge for microbiologists such as hitself.

"Our understanding of microbial biodiversity revolves around two extremes: nicely controlled laboratory models, with a single species of microbes, and DNA sequencing of environmental samples, revealing a baffling amount of diversity with thousands of different species. If we are to ever understand the vast biodiversity of the microbes, we need to close this gap in our knowledge.
Microbes get a bad reputation from the germs that make us really sick, but the truth is that most are good for us.  Microbes can prevent us from getting sick by blocking incoming pathogens. Good microbes also directly interact with our cells to stimulate our immune systems and keep it healthy. Microbes in our gut even help us more efficiently extract energy and nutrients from our food."
